Key result
HeartMate 3 implantation is technically feasible in small pediatric patients with specific surgical adaptations.
Why the study?
The lower limit of patient body size for safe HeartMate 3 LVAD implantation has not yet been determined, requiring technical considerations for smaller children.
What are the technical considerations for successful HeartMate 3 implantation in a small child?

What are the technical considerations for successful HeartMate 3 implantation in a small child?
This case report demonstrates the technical feasibility and considerations for implanting the HeartMate 3 LVAD in a small child, expanding its potential use to younger and smaller patients.
Technical success in one small child supports feasibility; leaves open safety, durability, and size limits for pediatric HM3 use.
The HeartMate 3 (HM3; Abbott) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) demonstrates superior clinical outcomes compared with previous LVADs,1 and its availability is expanding to younger and smaller patients.2,3 However, the lower limit of patient body size has not yet been determined. Some technical considerations are necessary for safe HM3 implantation in the smaller child. We report the technical issues associated with the successful implantation of the HM3 in a small child. Patient informed consent was orally obtained for publication of data.

Ushijima et al. (2024) conducted a case report in Heart failure requiring LVAD (n=1). HeartMate 3 (HM3) left ventricular assist device was evaluated. Successful implantation of the HeartMate 3 left ventricular assist device in a small child requires specific technical considerations.
