Key result
Delayed surgical postinfarction VSD repair after IABP stabilization enables successful closure and functional recovery.
Why the study?
Ventricular septal defect after myocardial infarction is a rare but often life-threatening mechanical complication requiring optimal timing and management for surgical repair.
Case Report (n=1)

May support IABP and inotrope stabilization in post-MI VSD; leaves open prospective validation.
Ereminienė et al. (2013) conducted a case report in Ventricular septal defect following myocardial infarction (n=1). Delayed surgical closure of ventricular septal defect with preoperative IABP support was evaluated on Survival and functional status. Delayed surgical closure of a postinfarction ventricular septal defect, performed 3 weeks after rupture following hemodynamic stabilization with an intra-aortic balloon pump, resulted in successful repair and functional improvement.
