Real-time PC-MRI matches gated PC-MRI for lumen area and stroke volume within ~5%.
Why the study?
Accurate and reproducible measurements of peripheral artery blood flow and vessel area variations are needed to study their correlation with cardiovascular risk factors.
The developed real-time PC-MRI method provides accurate measurements of blood flow and lumen area variations in peripheral arteries.
May enable real-time peripheral flow assessment; leaves open clinical validation before practice adoption.

Oelhafen et al. (2006) studied Peripheral artery function. Real-time phase-contrast (PC)-MRI vs. Gated PC-MRI (in vivo) and manual measurements (in vitro) was evaluated on Difference in lumen area and stroke volume. Real-time phase-contrast MRI provided accurate measurements of lumen area and stroke volume in vivo, with differences of 4.8% ± 14% and 3.0% ± 24.7% compared to gated PC-MRI.
