Key result
Female sex is linked to a ~5-fold higher risk of unplanned 6-week readmission after CABG.
Why the study?
Rates, reasons, and predictors of hospital readmission after coronary artery bypass grafting were not well characterized.

May support enhanced post-CABG monitoring in women and obese patients; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.
Sabourin et al. (1999) conducted an observational in Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (n=124). Female sex and obesity vs. Male sex and non-obese was evaluated on Unplanned cardiac-related hospital readmission (OR 4.7, 95% CI 1.5-14.6, p=0.007). Female sex (OR 4.7; 95% CI 1.5-14.6; P=0.007) and obesity (OR 3.7; 95% CI 1.2-11.6; P=0.026) significantly predicted unplanned hospital readmission 6 weeks after CABG.
