Does CMR-FT derived left atrial deformation predict major adverse cardiac events in patients following myocardial infarction?
Background: The role of left atrial performance and its prognostic value post myocardial infarction (MI) is unknown. Cardiac magnetic resonance myocardial feature tracking (CMR-FT) is a new method of quantifying myocardial function that offers reliable assessment of atrial deformation. Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the prognostic significance of CMR-FT derived left atrial (LA) deformation parameters in a large multicenter study and to define the most potent predictors of hard clinical events following MI. Methods: This CMR study included 1235 MI patients (n=795 with ST-elevation MI and 440 with non ST-elevation MI) from 15 centers. All patients underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention. CMR-FT analyses were performed in a blinded core-laboratory to determine LA performance by the means of LA reservoir (total strain εs), conduit (passive strain εe) and booster pump function (active strain εa). The primary clinical endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) within 12 months post MI.
