Rethinking ASI is a conceptual research essay that reconsiders three assumptions commonly embedded in discussions of artificial superintelligence (ASI): that human intelligence provides a fixed baseline for comparison, that superintelligence is primarily a future event, and that superintelligence must reside in a single independent entity. The essay develops this inquiry through three perspectives: relativity, historicity, and subjecthood. First, it argues that the human cognitive baseline itself changes as new knowledge, tools, and external capabilities are absorbed into human society. From this perspective, superintelligence may be understood not only as an absolute property of a system, but also as a position relative to the effective human cognitive baseline of a particular era. Second, the essay extends this perspective historically, examining how humans have repeatedly exceeded their biological and cognitive limits by combining with external capabilities—from other living beings and mechanical tools to electronic computers, networks, and contemporary AI. This raises the possibility that relative forms of superintelligence may have appeared repeatedly throughout human history and subsequently become ordinary as their capabilities were absorbed into the human baseline. Third, the essay questions whether the subject of superintelligence must necessarily be a single “who.” It introduces Combined Intelligence as a conceptual framework for examining problem-solving capacities that emerge through persistent interaction among humans, nonhuman beings, tools, machines, organizations, networks, and AI. It further considers Interactive Adjustment Systems, system-level learning, and the possibility that subjecthood in intelligent problem-solving may be distributed and shift among different participants and stages. Taken together, these arguments suggest a different question from the familiar “When will ASI arrive?” Rather than assuming that superintelligence must appear as one autonomous intelligence surpassing humanity, the essay asks whether superintelligence might also be understood as a historically recurring and relational phenomenon emerging through changing combinations of intelligence and capability. This bilingual edition contains the English translation followed by the original Korean text. The work was originally conceived and developed in Korean through an iterative process of human–AI dialogue. Author & AI Contribution Author and AI Contribution: The central questions and conceptual framework of this essay—including the relativity, historicity, and subjecthood of superintelligence—were proposed and developed by Lee, Jeong-jae (Republic of Korea). The author determined the direction of the argument, selected and revised hypotheses and examples, challenged and modified arguments generated during the dialogue, and made the final decisions regarding the manuscript. ChatGPT (GPT-5.6 Sol, OpenAI) contributed to the iterative development of the work by helping structure concepts, formulate counterarguments and additional questions, organize the argument, and edit the text. Some concepts and arguments developed through repeated cycles of questioning, response, criticism, and revision between the author and AI. This process may itself be considered an example of the Combined Intelligence discussed in the essay, although it does not constitute evidence for the validity of the essay’s claims.
