Cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) are zero-dimensional II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals with tunable bandgaps, strong photoluminescence, efficient charge-transfer properties, and sharp emission spectra. But low conductivity, surface defects, instability towards the environment, aggregation, and lack of efficient interparticle charge transfer limit their practical application. In order to overcome these limitations, various functional materials have been combined with CdSe QDs to enhance conductivity, modify surface properties, stabilize the nanocrystals, and control interfacial charge transfer. The aim of this review is to present an overview of the recent progress in the field of CdSe QD-based composite materials along with their advances in photocatalysis, sensing, and energy storage & conversion.
