What is the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetic patients in Libreville?
Highlights the high burden of cardiovascular risk factors, particularly hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, among type 2 diabetic patients in Gabon.
Conclusion. Diabetes is a major independent cardiovascular risk factor that triples the risk of cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to identify cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetics (T2D) seen at the endocrinology department of the university hospital center in Libreville. Methodology. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from September to November 2021, including 100 diabetics seen in outpatient consultation. The main cardiovascular risk factors studied in T2D patients were: obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking. Results. We studied 100 patients. The average age was 55.3 +/- 12.5 years and the sex ratio was 0.54. The mean duration of diabetes was 8.7+/- 7.8 years and 43% of patients had a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) below 7%. A history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) were noted in 7% and 13% of patients respectively. Known and treated hypertension was found in 53% of cases. Obesity affected 40% of diabetics and was morbid in 7% of them. Dyslipidemia was represented by: total hypercholesterolemia (56%), hypo HDLemia (15%), hyper LDLemia (33%), and hypertriglyceridemia (13%). Abdominal circumference was pathological in 72% of patients, 57% of whom were women and 15% were men. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 52%, and smoking affected 20% of patients. Conclusion. The cardiovascular risk factors associated with diabetes are primarily hypercholesterolemia and hypertension. The identification and management of these factors could reduce morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients.
