Key result
Cardiac irradiation linked to ~13-fold higher risk of abnormal cardiac tests in childhood cancer survivors.
Why the study?
Long-term cardiac effects after childhood cancer treatment with chest radiotherapy or cytostatics were not well characterized.
Cohort (n=41)
Relative Risk: 12.8 (95% CI 1.8–90.8)

Cardiac irradiation linked to higher test abnormalities in survivors; leaves open optimal long-term screening protocols.
Mäkipernaa et al. (1990) conducted a cohort in Childhood cancer (n=41). Cardiac irradiation vs. Other childhood cancer treatments (no cardiac irradiation) was evaluated on Abnormal cardiac test result (RR 12.8, 95% CI 1.8-90.8, p=<0.02). Cardiac irradiation in childhood cancer survivors was associated with a 12.8-fold increased risk of abnormal cardiac test results compared to other treatments (95% CI 1.8-90.8; P<0.02).
