Key result
Dietary phosphorus depletion cuts stroke volume ~29%, reversible with repletion.
Why the study?
The effects of phosphorus depletion on cardiac muscle function and myocardial performance were not well characterized.
Absolute Event Rate: 17% vs 24%
p-value: p=<0.01

Hypophosphatemia may reversibly impair myocardial performance; leaves open human applicability of canine data.
Fuller et al. (1978) studied Experimental phosphorus deficiency (n=6). Phosphorus depletion vs. Baseline (pre-depletion) and repletion was evaluated on Stroke volume (ml) (p=<0.01). Diet-induced phosphorus depletion in dogs significantly depressed myocardial performance, reducing stroke volume from 24 to 17 ml, which was reversible with phosphorus repletion.
