Key result
CPB with cardioplegia is linked to elevated postoperative ionized magnesium levels reaching ~1.04 mmol/L.
Why the study?
The usefulness of measuring ionized magnesium concentration during the perioperative period of cardiac surgery was unclear.

May warrant ionized magnesium monitoring during CPB; leaves open outcome impact versus total magnesium.

Kometani et al. (2022) conducted a cohort in Elective cardiac surgery (n=35). Cardiopulmonary bypass with cardioplegia vs. Non-cardiopulmonary bypass (off-pump) was evaluated on Perioperative changes in ionized magnesium (iMg) levels and correlation with total magnesium (tMg) (p=<0.05).
