Since diagnostic ultrasound was introduced into obstetrics and gynaecology (Donald et al., 1958), it has become an invaluable aid in localization of the placenta and assessment of fetal maturity, growth rate, multiple gestation and presentation. In addition, ultrasonography has been useful in the diagnosis of anencephalus, hydrocephalus, meningocoele, omphalocoele, hydrops, ovarian cysts, polycystic kidneys, hydronephrosis and megaureter.
