This article provides one explanation for how multicultural justice as a distinct form of social justice developed in Canada. The analysis specifically focuses on the social, political, and human factors that contributed to the formation of multicultural justice since the Second World War. Applying Nancy Fraser’s threefold typology of dimensions of justice to the Canadian context, the article brings theoretical and conceptual clarity to the ways that Canadian multicultural justice emerged. Not only does the analysis provide a novel explanation for multicultural justice in Canada, but the tripartite framework also holds the potential to foster a more complete understanding of the complexity of struggles that inform multicultural justice in the twenty-first century.
