Key result
COPD is linked to impaired LV diastolic function, worsening with disease severity.
Why the study?
Left ventricular function is influenced by COPD severity, but the prevalence of echocardiographic abnormalities by conventional echocardiography and Doppler tissue imaging in COPD patients was not well characterized.
Cross-Sectional (n=60)
Single-blind

May warrant diastolic assessment in COPD; hypothesis-generating for prospective trials on progression and outcomes.
Eweda et al. (2015) conducted a cross-sectional in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (n=60). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease vs. Healthy subjects without COPD was evaluated on Left ventricular diastolic function (E/A ratio) (p=<0.001). Left ventricular diastolic function was significantly impaired in patients with COPD compared to healthy controls, with the degree of dysfunction worsening as COPD severity increased.
