A comparison of the efficacy of splenic irradiation vs busulfan in the treatment of chronic granulocytic leukemia indicates that busulfan is the superior mode of therapy by all criteria examined. There is a statistically significant improvement in survival at the end of the second and third years from diagnosis. Patients treated with splenic irradiation not only became refractory to therapy at an earlier point in time than do those patients treated with busulfan, but the irradiation also seems to preclude long term survival.
