Older age is associated with increased risk of perioperative supraventricular arrhythmia.
Why the study?
The study aimed to clarify clinical correlates and risk factors for perioperative supraventricular tachyarrhythmia, including the impact of age and digoxin use.
SVA after noncardiac surgery was associated with 33% longer stay; leaves open whether prevention shortens hospitalization or improves outcomes.

The mean (±SD) ages of patients with and without supraventricular arrhythmia in our cohort were 68 ± 9.6 and 66 ± 9.6 years, respectively (P < 0.01). We also agree that the finding of a lower rate of arrhythmia among patients having thoracic surgery who were using digoxin before surgery should be interpreted with caution, as indicated in our article. However, the magnitude in the reduction in risk for supraventricular arrhythmia among ... A 1999 study conducted a letter in Perioperative Supraventricular Tachyarrhythmia. Preoperative digoxin vs. No preoperative digoxin was evaluated on Supraventricular arrhythmia. Patients with perioperative supraventricular arrhythmia were significantly older than those without (68 vs 66 years, P<0.01).
