A significant increase in the efficiency of ruby laser rods was obtained by irradiating the rods with Co⁶⁰ gamma rays. The increase in efficiency seems to be due to a more efficient absorption of the pump light by color centers produced in the ruby by irradiation. The mechanism of energy transfer between the color centers and the laser transition has not yet been determined. (auth)
