The reproducibility and ease of performance of coagulation factor assay technics which utilize commercially available sources of deficient plasma specimens, and newer procedures such as the activated partial thromboplastin time test were investigated. Labile as well as stable factors were studied in the normal and abnormal ranges. Reproducibility and accuracy remained the same by testing daily and over a 2-week period. The coefficients of variation calculated from reproducibility of clotting time in seconds were 1.9 to 3.2% for Factor V, 2.0 to 2.8% for Factor VIII, and 1.5% for Factor IX. The coefficients of variation calculated from the reproducibility of percentage activity were 13 to 14% for Factor V, 13 to 19% for Factor VIII, and 5% for Factor IX.
