Impaired heart rate turbulence strongly correlates with mitral regurgitation severity in mitral valve prolapse.
Why the study?
Mitral valve prolapse is usually benign but can be associated with increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias leading to sudden cardiac death, necessitating risk assessment.

May prompt autonomic assessment in severe mitral regurgitation; leaves open prognostic value in mitral valve prolapse.
Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has an incidence ranging from 2 to 3%. It is usually a benign condition, but it can be associated with an increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias (VA) leading to sudden cardiac death (SDC). Our study aimed to evidence to victims of SDC, the incidental presence of MVP, and the associated histological alterations. In patients with MVP, we assessed the increased risk for VA, by studying the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Heart Rate Turbulence (HRT). Firstly, in 2021,

Tudoran et al. (2023) conducted a cross-sectional in Mitral Valve Prolapse (n=50). Severity of mitral regurgitation was evaluated on Correlation between heart rate turbulence (HRT) categories and severity of mitral regurgitation (MR) (r=0.715, p=0.001). In patients with mitral valve prolapse, heart rate turbulence strongly correlated with the severity of mitral regurgitation (r=0.715), reflecting a sympathovagal imbalance.
