Bradycardial pacing protects against catecholamine-induced myocardial damage and preserves cardiac pump function in rabbits.
Why the study?
The protective effects of long-term bradycardial pacing against catecholamine-induced myocardial damage were not established.

High-dose norepinephrine causes subendocardial injury and impairs cardiac performance in rabbits; leaves open relevance to clinical vasopressor dosing.
Brown et al. (1988) studied Catecholamine-induced myocardial damage. Bradycardial pacing vs. Control hearts (no pacing) was evaluated on Myocardial damage, capillary distribution, and cardiac pump performance. Bradycardial pacing for 3-4 weeks prior to norepinephrine administration protected rabbit hearts against catecholamine-induced myocardial damage and maintained normal cardiac pump performance.
