Does oral Levo-Glutamine as an adjunct to standard therapy reduce vasoocclusive crises and hospitalisations in paediatric patients with sickle cell disease?
Absolute Event Rate: 9.09% vs 39.13%
p-value: p=0.002
Oral Levo-Glutamine as an adjunct to standard therapy safely and significantly reduces the incidence of painful vasoocclusive crises and hospitalisations in paediatric sickle cell disease.
May support adjunctive levo-glutamine in pediatric sickle cell disease; leaves open confirmation in randomized trials.
count decreased by 3.43% (P < 0.001) and LDH decreased by 208.73 U/L (P < 0.001).Painful VOC at week 36 were significantly lower in the Levo-Glutamine group (9.09% vs. 39.13%;P = 0.002).Hospitalisations were significantly reduced (9.09% vs. 28.26%;P = 0.040), cumulative hospitalisations decreasing from 2.30 to 0.72 (68.70% reduction; P < 0.001).The therapy was well tolerated. Conclusion: Oral Levo-Glutamine as an adjunct to standard therapy significantly improved anaemia, reduced haemolysis, decreased vasoocclusive crises and hospitalisation rates in paediatric sickle cell disease. The findings support Levo-Glutamine as a safe,well-tolerated adjunctive treatment .

Shouri et al. (2026) conducted a cross-sectional in Sickle Cell Disease. Oral Levo-Glutamine vs. Standard therapy was evaluated on Painful vasoocclusive crises (VOC) at week 36 (p=0.002).
