Comments on the article by M. Campione and T. Joiner (see record 2027-58493-001), which expresses concern that Canada's implementation of medical assistance in dying (MAID) facilitates suicide. In their comment, the authors argue that (a) MAID and suicide share the same conceptual definition and core motivations, (b) efforts to create a hard line between them may be driven by stigma or fear surrounding "suicide" rather than evidence, and (c) a maximally informed and ethical approach to MAID requires that we acknowledge the connection and, from this place of truth, consider carefully which forms of suicide society should continue to prevent and which it may wish to support.
