Comments on the article by M. Campione and T. Joiner (see record 2027-58493-001), which highlights the alarmingly high rate of use of Canada's medical assistance in dying program. Campione and Joiner clearly and cogently describe how the structure of this program may allow clinicians to hasten the death of people who are not terminally ill and who instead have untreated psychopathology. They articulate significant concerns with the medical assistance in dying program in its current form. In this comment, the author addresses the broader question of what obligations clinicians have to persist with suicide prevention efforts before accepting or facilitating the death of their patient.
