I have investigated atomic vacancy V10 in silicon crystal using large-scale first-principles electronic structure calculations. The energy ordering of the four levels arising within the band gap was found to be the opposite of predictions made decades ago. This ordering is well explained by a new molecular-orbital picture I propose, which uses the dangling bonds of the sixteen Si atoms (not four Si atoms) surrounding the vacancy.
