Wine is a food-cultural product: it is chosen for meals, paired with dishes, opened for special occasions, and discussed in a shared language of taste. Yet most research on how consumers experience wine relies on controlled tastings or product-centred rating platforms that abstract wine away from the table. We use the Reddit community r/wine as a longitudinal corpus of spontaneous, unprompted wine conversation (66,081 submissions, 2012–2025) and read it as a record of wine’s place in food culture. Using a curated lexicon of ten thematic categories, we quantify the prevalence of culinary, social and sensory themes, reconstruct food–wine and occasion–wine associations from co-mention, trace their evolution over fourteen years, and map the structure of the discourse with a co-occurrence network, community detection and PageRank centrality. Culinary and social themes are among the most prevalent in the corpus; the food–wine associations that emerge from consumer discussion closely reproduce established pairing conventions; occasion-specific choices reflect shared cultural scripts; and food, style and occasion form a single structural community. Sensory description did not increase steadily across the period; instead it rose sharply and significantly in the most recent years (2023–2025), in both prevalence and network centrality. Reddit thus allows wine talk to be observed at scale, as it occurs unprompted, within an Anglophone online enthusiast community.
