Key result
Higher NT-proBNP levels linked to more severe COPD exacerbations and hypoxemia.
Why the study?
The relationship between serum NT-pro BNP levels and the severity of COPD exacerbation was not well established.
Cross-Sectional (n=140)
No
p-value: p=0.009
May aid COPD exacerbation risk stratification; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before clinical use.

Ebrahimzadeh et al. (2018) conducted a cross-sectional in Acute exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (n=140). Serum NT-pro BNP level vs. Lower serum NT-pro BNP levels was evaluated on Severity of COPD exacerbation (p=0.009). Higher serum NT-pro BNP levels were significantly associated with greater severity of COPD exacerbation (P=0.009) and the presence of hypoxemia (P=0.01).
