2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)benzofuran, a previously unreported product of guaiacol pyrolysis, was isolated from guaiacol pyrolyzed at 600 °C in a yield of 1.5 wt%.A plausible formation pathway is proposed, involving the addition of o-cresol-formed during guaiacol pyrolysis-to an o-quinone methide intermediate generated via methoxy group rearrangement. This compound is known for its strong antifungal activity, suggesting it may contribute to the antifungal properties of tar and pyroligneous acids derived from the pyrolysis of lignin and wood.
