Why the study?
Cardiac cystic echinococcosis is rare in children and presents diagnostic and management challenges due to its uncommon size and location in the interventricular septum.
Case Report (n=1)
Urgent multidisciplinary surgical and medical management is critical and effective for treating rare, life-threatening pediatric cardiac cystic echinococcosis presenting with cardiogenic shock.
Cystic echinococcus (CE) rarely affects the heart in children, representing less than 2% of cases in endemic regions. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy who presented with heart failure and low cardiac output, found to have a very large cardiac cyst attached to the interventricular septum (IVS). This report details the multidisciplinary team (MDT) management that led to a successful outcome. We present imaging that established the multisystem diagnosis and discuss the rarity of the cyst’s size and location. A review of the latest literature is also included, highlighting the importance of context-specific interventions and awareness among clinicians and public health authorities.
