Scoping review protocol maps global mHealth-supported remote cardiac rehabilitation to inform uptake in African health systems.
Why the study?
Despite global evidence supporting mHealth interventions for remote cardiac rehabilitation, data on availability and utilisation in Africa and contextualisation for African health systems remain limited.
This protocol outlines a scoping review to evaluate the global implementation of mHealth-supported remote cardiac rehabilitation to inform its adaptation and adoption in African health systems.
May inform mHealth cardiac rehabilitation adaptation in African systems; leaves open need for local efficacy trials.
Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a cornerstone of secondary prevention of cardiovascular events. Globally, mHealth interventions have emerged as promising solutions for delivering the CR programme remotely. Despite the proven usefulness of mHealth CR interventions globally, evidence on the availability and utilisation of such programmes in Africa remains limited. Moreover, global evidence on mHealth CR interventions has not been explicitly contextualised for adoption or adaptation to African health system realities, leaving a serious gap in realising such promising solutions.

Demoz et al. (2026) conducted a review in Cardiovascular events requiring secondary prevention. mHealth-supported remote cardiac rehabilitation was evaluated. This scoping review protocol outlines a strategy to map global evidence on mHealth-supported remote cardiac rehabilitation to inform adaptation and uptake in African health systems.
