Settlement caused by soil compression is a key consideration in the design and serviceability assessment of foundations. In fine-grained saturated soils, consolidation is time-dependent and is associated with the dissipation of excess pore-water pressure and transfer of stress to the soil skeleton. This paper reviews the basic geotechnical concepts governing consolidation and settlement and outlines a practical framework for combining laboratory measurements, field monitoring and numerical analysis. The framework includes soil characterization, estimation of compressibility and consolidation parameters, settlement calculation, and comparison of predicted movement with observations. It is a methodological discussion based on published literature; no new laboratory or field results are reported.
