Soil consolidation and foundation settlement are important aspects of geotechnical design because excessive or differential movement can affect the serviceability of structures. This thesis summarizes the role of soil compressibility, effective stress, pore-water pressure dissipation and drainage conditions in settlement assessment. It proposes a workflow that combines site investigation, oedometer testing, analytical estimation and field monitoring. The work is literature-based and methodological; no original experimental data or numerical findings are claimed.
