Intra-articular injection is linked to subsequent left atrial appendage closure device infection.
Case Report
This case report highlights a potential risk of left atrial appendage closure device infection secondary to intra-articular injection.
Intra-articular injections may introduce infection risk to LAA closure devices; leaves open need for targeted prophylaxis studies.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia globally, with a continually increasing incidence. 1,2 AF can cause complications such as ischemic strokes, and in most non-valvular cases, the left atrial appendage (LAA) is the culprit for thrombus formation. 3,4 LAA occlusion methods were invented in 1946, which had both percutaneous and surgical approaches. The two percutaneous methods available are LAA occlusion devices (LAAODs) such as the Watchman Device and the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug.
