Search has shifted from ranked lists of blue links to AI answers. In 2026, industry keyword trackers report Google AI Overviews shown on roughly 43–50% of queries, while the one large-scale academic measurement study reviewed here finds substantially lower overall activation (13.7%, rising to 64.7% for question-form queries), a gap this article attributes to differences between commercial tracking samples and broad academic query samples rather than treating either figure as settled; coverage is markedly higher for informational and decision-related queries in both types of study. Zero-click rates vary from 37% for transactional queries to 92% for informational queries (aggregating to roughly 75% overall), and rise from 63% without an AI Overview present to 82% when one is; citation overlap with traditional Google rankings sits as low as 14–17% in several studies. Standing number one is no longer enough. This article explores the new rules of visibility in the generative age. Operating on up-to-date signals from BrightEdge, SparkToro, Similarweb, First Page Sage, Pew, Ahrefs, Princeton GEO research, Google Search Console generative reports along with the author’s practical track record of scaling SEO- and GEO-based Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) systems, it lays out the continuum of SEO, GEO and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), offers seven evidence-based rules centred on entity clarity (mainly Wikipedia and Wikidata), citability signals (statistics, source citations, expert quotations), third-party corroboration, technical eligibility, multi-engine strategy, evolved measurement, and content freshness, and concludes with an operational implementation pathway and strategic implications for digital marketing teams. Brands that choose to see SEO and GEO as a single seamless system of authority and discoverability will monopolise the next decade of digital visibility; those that do not will gradually lose category presence within the answers users now receive.
