Moderate coffee consumption appears safe in ventricular arrhythmias and is linked to lower AF recurrence.
Why the study?
Most hospitals and cardiac rehabilitation facilities provide decaffeinated coffee to cardiac patients, despite recent studies suggesting that coffee drinking may decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Does regular caffeinated coffee consumption increase the risk of atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias in healthy individuals and cardiac patients?
Does regular caffeinated coffee consumption increase the risk of atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias in healthy individuals and cardiac patients?
Moderate consumption of regular caffeinated coffee is safe and potentially protective against atrial fibrillation without increasing ventricular arrhythmias in habitual coffee drinkers, suggesting that hospital and cardiac rehabilitation policies restricting patients to decaffeinated coffee should be revisited.

May support relaxing coffee limits in arrhythmia patients; leaves open randomized confirmation of AF benefit.
Most hospitals and cardiac rehabilitation facilities provide decaffeinated coffee to cardiac patients in place of regular coffee. Recent studies, however, suggest that coffee drinking may decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Review of controlled studies shows that drinking regular coffee in moderation is safe. It may even lead to a decrease in atrial arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, and it is safe in patients with ventricular arrhythmias. This is particularly true in patients who drink coffee regularly and in moderation. Energy drinks, however, that contain large doses of caffeine may indeed be harmful and should be avoided. The policies of serving only decaffeinated coffee in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities should be revisited.

Rezkalla et al. (2026) conducted a review in Cardiac arrhythmias, specifically atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias. Regular caffeinated coffee consumption vs. Caffeine avoidance, non-coffee drinkers, or decaffeinated coffee was evaluated on Incidence or recurrence of atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias.
