Neutron diffraction was performed on samples of the oxygen ion conductor (Bi2O3)0.80(Er2O3)0.20. Results revealed a structural change in an “aged” sample, which had been annealed at 500 °C with resulting oxygen ion conductivity degradation. The essential change is the displacement of nearly all anions from tetrahedral 8c sites to 32f sites along 〈111〉 directions. Taking this displacement into account, a structural model for oxide vacancy ordering is proposed.
