The media play a role in promoting linguistic patterns and shaping trends in society’s linguistic attitudes and practices. In the case of Galicia, the main entity responsible for promoting the use of non-sexist language is the Corporación de Servizos Audiovisuais de Galicia (CSAG). To examine the extent to which this entity is fulfilling that commitment, this study analyses the use of the generic masculine, considered sexist, in oral interventions in Galician, Spanish, Catalan, and English, as well as in the Galician subtitles of the videonews published on the G24Noticias Instagram account, a preferred medium of news consumption among Galician society. The study adopts a multimodal approach and considers the potential space-time limitations of subtitling. The results reveal considerable room for improvement and show that non-sexist alternatives, compliant with Galician language rules and equally concise, could have been used.
