Digital marketing has fundamentally reshaped how Indian consumers discover, evaluate, and purchase products and services. Driven by rapid smart phone penetration, affordable data, and an expanding e-commerce ecosystem, India has transitioned from a predominantly offline, relationship driven retail culture to a hybrid digital-physical marketplace. This article examines the extent and nature of this transformation by analyzing how digital marketing channels social media, search engines, influencer marketing, email, and mobile applications—influence Indian consumer buying behavior across the purchase journey i.e. awareness, consideration, decision, and post-purchase advocacy. The study draws on secondary data, industry reports, and existing academic literature to identify key drivers, demographic variations, sectoral differences, and challenges such as data privacy concerns and digital trust deficits. Findings suggest that digital marketing has significantly shortened purchase cycles, increased price sensitivity, elevated the role of peer reviews and influencers, and created a generation of consumers who research extensively online even when they ultimately buy offline. The article concludes with strategic implications for marketers and recommendations for future research.
