Drone motors must be lightweight, flat, and capable of producing the desired torque. Axial-flux motors are known to be suitable for flat and thin configurations. However, conventional electromagnetic steel sheets are not suitable for manufacturing stator cores with three-dimensional geometries. This paper presents an axial-flux permanent magnet (PM) motor with a soft magnetic composite (SMC) stator core, which enables greater design flexibility. The proposed motor is optimized to maximize the torque-to-weight ratio, and its performance is evaluated experimentally.
