In Japan, the aging of condominium stock and the growing risk of poorly managed condominiums have become significant social concerns. Although condominium renewal is closely related to the City Planning Act, statistical data by city planning areas and districts are not available. This study proposes a “linkage method” that integrates microdata from the Housing and Land Survey with small-area GIS data from the Population Census to estimate condominium buildings by city planning areas and districts. The study outlines (1) the estimation method, (2) estimations at national, and (3) an analysis of location characteristics, along with related implications for condominium policies.
