Synthesis of heterocyclic compounds has been interesting area from last some decades. Heterocyclic compounds play an important role in organic chemistry because of their biological activities. Heterocyclic compounds containing five-membered rings exhibit significant biological activities. Thiadiazole, a five-membered heterocyclic scaffold, contains nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms and shows versatile biological activities; therefore, it is an important class of compounds for new drug development.1,3,4-thiadiazole and some of their derivatives show broad-spectrum pharmacological activity. Nowadays, resistance of bacteria and fungi towards modern medicine is a serious issue in healthcare. Therefore, the development of new antimicrobial agents is needed. This review highlights the main antimicrobial properties exhibited by 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives. Several 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives have demonstrated higher antimicrobial activity than the standard drugs, and the derivatives can be considered as lead compounds for drug synthesis.
