Novel BCG signal framework classifies hypertension with up to ~99% accuracy.
Why the study?
Ballistocardiogram signals hold promise for unobtrusive home-based hypertension detection, but waveform variability, environmental noise, and complex time-varying cardiac activity make stabilizing hypertension-related features challenging.
Does a multiband feature fusion framework using ballistocardiogram signals improve hypertension classification accuracy compared to existing state-of-the-art methods in home settings?

Long-term home-based blood pressure monitoring is crucial for reducing the risk of hypertension. Ballistocardiogram (BCG) signals, as an unobtrusive method for assessing cardiovascular health, have shown promising application value in the early detection of hypertension in home settings. However, the waveform variability of BCG signals, interference from environmental noise, and the complex time-varying nature of cardiac activity in home environments pose challenges for stabilizing hypertensionrelated features. To tackle these challenges, we propose a multiband feature fusion framework that integrates dynamic filtering and multi-scale convolution, aiming to stably and comprehensively extract hypertension-related pathological features across different frequency bands from BCG signals collected in home settings. Additionally, we employ contrastive learning to constrain the feature extraction process, thereby reducing the impact of individual-specific traits on classification and enhancing the model’s cross-individual generalization performance. Experiments on public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves average accuracy of 99.02% and 92.16% in intra-individual and inter-individual hypertension classification tasks, respectively, outperforming existing state-of-the-art methods and offering a viable solution for precise home-based hypertension screening.
