Stoke Hall Quarry (Stone Sales ) Ltd of Grindleford are undertaking a review of their planning permission as required under the 1995 Environment Act. As part of that review they are producing an Environmental Statement to accompany the review. This report outlines the results of an archaeological desk-top and walk-over survey which forms part of the Environmental Statement. ARCUS were commissioned to produce this report by Glentoal Associates the agents for Stoke Hall Quarry (Stone Sales ) Ltd. The desk-top assessment looks at the site and a 1km search area around it while the walk-over survey examines the area within the site boundary. At the time of the site visit the site was heavily overgrown and the resulting poor visibility means that the walk-over survey may have missed possible archaeological features. All the archaeological features identified within the site boundaries were post-medieval in date, though significant earlier features were identified in the wider search area. Some of these features form elements in the extensive Bronze Age remains that are knownto exist in the area. Much of the area within the site has previously been disturbed and is therefore of limited archaeological potential, but the north-west and north-east corners of the site could retain archaeological remains.
