Abstract Introduction Comfort, support, and temperature regulation are critical contributors to sleep quality. Hybrid mattresses that combine pressure relief and cooling technologies may reduce nighttime discomfort and enhance sleep quality. This study compared sleep on a hybrid cooling mattress to participants’ baseline sleep on their original mattresses. Methods Healthy adults (N=33; 78% female; M age=42) who reported sleeping hot, experiencing night sweats or hot flashes, and/or nighttime discomfort completed a 10-week in-home pre–post study. Participants slept on their original mattresses for four weeks, followed by six weeks on the Sealy Posturepedic Elite Hybrid Mattress, including a 2-week adjustment period. Objective sleep was measured nightly using a PSG-validated, noncontact biomotion device, SleepScore Max. Daily and end-of-period surveys assessed perceived sleep-related outcomes. Analyses used multilevel regression and paired t-tests (α=.05). Results Across 1,159 tracked nights, participants showed multiple objective improvements while sleeping on the hybrid cooling mattress, including faster sleep onset (5 minutes faster; -18%), longer sleep duration (+4%), and better sleep efficiency (+2%). Participants also experienced more REM sleep (+6%), deep sleep (+8%), and light sleep (+2%), alongside increases in SleepScore (age- and gender-normalized overall sleep quality; +3%), MindScore (age- and gender-normalized REM sleep; +3%), and BodyScore (age- and gender-normalized deep sleep; +3%). All ps.05. Self-reported outcomes showed substantial perceived benefits: greater comfort (+186%), support (+194%), pressure relief (+266%), and coolness (+295%), as well as fewer nights per week of tossing and turning (-60%) and fewer aches and pains (–57%). Participants also reported improvements in subjective ease of falling asleep (+129%), perceived sleep quality (+150%), sleep satisfaction (+178%), and feeling well-rested in the morning (+133%). Conclusion Sleeping on a hybrid cooling mattress was associated with faster sleep onset, improved sleep architecture, greater sleep efficiency, and broad perceived improvements in comfort, support, and overall sleep quality compared to participants’ original mattresses.
