Abstract Introduction Comfort and support are essential components of sleep quality, and mattress design can directly affect both. Empirical evidence examining specific mattress types and their impacts on objective and perceived sleep outcomes remains limited. This study evaluated sleep on a mattress with precision fit coils compared to participants’ baseline sleep on their original mattresses. Methods Healthy adults (N=31; 84% female; M age=45) who reported difficulty falling or staying asleep participated in a 10-week in-home field study using a pre-post design. Participants slept on their original mattresses for four weeks, followed by six weeks on a Sealy Posturepedic or Posturepedic Plus Mattress, including a two-week adjustment period. Objective sleep was measured nightly using a PSG-validated, noncontact biomotion device, SleepScore Max. Daily and end-of-period questionnaires assessed perceived sleep outcomes. Analyses included multilevel regression and paired t-tests (α=.05). Results Across 1,161 tracked nights, there were significant increases in objectively measured time in bed (+3.1%), sleep duration (+3.3%), light sleep (+5.0%), proportion of the night in light sleep (+2.4%), and BodyScore (+1.4%), a measure of age- and gender-normalized deep sleep. Although a lower proportion of the night was spent in REM sleep (-5.8%) the number of minutes spent in REM sleep did not change significantly. Participants reported fewer aches and pains (-44%) as well as improvement in numerous perceived sleep outcomes, including ease of falling asleep (+58%), fewer nights of tossing and turning (-40%), better sleep quality (+88%), sleep satisfaction (+112%), and feeling well-rested upon waking (+88%). Participants also reported increases in comfort (+57%), support (+95%), and pressure relief (+167%). All ps.05. Conclusion Sleeping on a coil mattress was associated with improved objective sleep and many self-reported benefits, including greater comfort, support, and perceived sleep quality compared to participants’ original mattresses.
