Abstract

This interview is a part of the “Punjabi in BC” oral history project (2019-2023). “Punjabi in BC” is comprised of interviews with over 50 K-12 teachers, language advocates, journalists, and writers who have contributed to the life of the Punjabi language in British Columbia, Canada. The subject of this interview is Deep Singh Sangra who immigrated to Canada in 1975. For 20 years, Sangra dedicated himself to teaching Punjabi at gurdwaras, night schools, Khalsa, and elementary schools, often teaching seven days a week. This interview is divided into three segments and includes one promotional video. In the interview, Deep Singh Sangra talks about his journey towards becoming a Punjabi teacher, the role that gurdwaras have played in preserving and promoting the Punjabi language, and his role in the founding of the Khalsa School.
