Review reveals postinfectious obliterative bronchiolitis as an under-recognized cause of chronic obstructive airway disease, highlighting diagnostic challenges.
A BSTRACT Postinfectious obliterative bronchiolitis (PIOB), a type of small airway disease, is a common yet under-recognized cause of chronic obstructive airway disease. PIOB is characterized by progressive fibrosis and narrowing of the bronchioles resulting from prior respiratory infection and bronchiolar epithelial injury. PIOB is often misdiagnosed as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to a lack of awareness. PIOB needs to be identified as a separate entity owing to its unique clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic implications which have been addressed in this review.
