Literature review highlights the role of technological innovation in sustainable packaging for the food industry, indicating emerging practices and opportunities.
Over the decade, food packaging innovations have evolved due to technological advances, and growth in retail and e-commerce. Nonetheless, there is a dearth of literature on how this technological innovation promotes sustainable packaging practices within the food industry. Therefore, this study reviews the existing literature and draws on the applications of technologies for sustainable food packaging. Details of existing literature from 2013 to 2023 were obtained from the Scopus database, as this period saw colossal technological advancement in the food packaging sector. The formulation of the taxonomy is the novelty of this review paper highlighting the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the packaged food industry. These findings will help consumers, food businesses, and policymakers gain concise and specific data and also provide the scope for future research to academicians in this field.
