This analysis reveals a successful approach to PCCP rehabilitation in a 25-mile pipeline, suggesting better resource utilization.
In late November 2023, a routine inspection of a 25-mi-long pipeline that includes 9 mi of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) segments revealed a significant number of newly distressed PCCP segments. Many of these distressed segments were determined to be critically distressed, requiring urgent repair. Normally, Metropolitan would repair the individual critical segments, but the quantity and distribution of these led Metropolitan to a decision to urgently rehabilitate approximately 3.2 mi of the pipeline. This paper discusses how Metropolitan capitalized on its proactive PCCP Rehabilitation Program pre-design and planning activities; leveraged its resources; and collaboratively aligned all stakeholders, including customers, permitting agencies, and the public, to go from design to completion of the rehabilitation of 3.2 mi of PCCP in the span of 12 months, when normally 2–3 years are allotted for this process.
