Survey reveals reasons for early leaving among trainees at Patras PVTI, suggesting improvements in vocational training services.
In the present study, the phenomenon of early leaving of trainees in Patras Public Vocational Training Institute (Patras PVTI) is investigated. The survey was conducted within the two months of June-July 2020 and involved 53 people who dropped out of the institute. The research questions raised are pertinent to the reasons why the leavers quit the training program which they studied at Patras PVTI as well as their proposals in relation to the improvement of the studies and services provided by Patras PVTI. Finding a job in the chosen field of study was found to be the strongest motivation for enrollment, followed by obtaining an additional degree. The reasons for dropping out of school are related to the operation of the afternoon schedule which is not convenient for them either because they found a job or because of overwhelming financial obligations or difficulties. Among the improvement proposals the most expressed ones were the change of opening hours and οbligatory attendance, and the need for improving the infrastructure related to the laboratories and their equipment. Finally, reference is made to the Cedefop toolkit concerning the early leaving of those in vocational education and training.
