This essay analyzes the transformative impact of liturgy on spiritual life, suggesting a deeper Church appreciation of its role.
In his seminal work, The Spirit of the Liturgy , Romano Guardini posits that “the Catholic liturgy is the supreme example of an objectively established rule of spiritual life.” This notion is not singular. Following the thought of Guardini and Cipriano Vagaggini, this essay will analyze how one’s formation in the ways of perfection is aided through one’s actual participation in the Church’s sacred liturgy. While primarily engaging texts associated with the liturgical renewal of the twentieth century, additional support will be provided by the Church’s liturgical and spiritual patrimony. The aim is to provide the contemporary Church with a deeper appreciation of how the liturgy is transformative, forming all Christians to be more perfect members of Christ’s Body.
